- This short novel brings you striaght into this monstrous underworld with so many components in such a short span of pages but I didnt find myself overwhelmed or confused.
- Loved the Polish influences and the subtextual nods to the treatment of immigrants throughout history and how some view others that are different than them.
- Powerful thesis on atonement for wrongdoings and the importance of self-forgiveness in the path of making right.
- Ala, Nicko, and Dmitr captured my attention as characters and the slight shifts of perspective within the a third person pov was well done craft and structure wise.
- This book is for those who are missing the good parts of the Supernatural series and it even rights the wrongs the series did.
- Will 100% reread and annotate before the second arrives in Sept

When Among Crows was really well done. It was short but beautifully done. I was pulled in by the folklore and atmosphere. I really enjoyed this read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

what a cool story.
It felt new, even though most of the concepts and monsters used in the book come form folklore (which is acknowledged as they're explained) but the Unlikely trio of characters, the way those Knight's of the Holy Order magic works...the society of monsters mixed in with humans and how they've adapted to feed off human emotions without being outright killers. All super cool and well explained. Loved the back story reveal and the twist on the ending giving a new life option rather than what you're expecting.

3.75/5 🌟
A modern fairytale inspired by Slavic folklore, following Dymitr, a hunter with a perilous mission, and Ala, a fear-eating zmora cursed to die. Together, they embark on a quest to find the legendary witch Baba Jaga, navigating a magical underworld in Chicago.
This was super interesting because it had a lot of Polish folklore involved in it and, as someone who’s half Polish, I love learning about cultural myths and legends. I didn’t know anything about this going in and was super excited to find out it was based on Polish culture.
I will say I was a little confused at the start of the book… I wasn’t really sure what was going on and what the whole premise of the book was going to be. It took a little bit for me to get into it and that’s not great when you’re reading a book under 200 pages. I did end up enjoying the rest of the story once I got my bearings and figured out more of what was going on though and it was a solid, quick read!
