Loved being inside of a Slavic-inspired world. Would read another! Would be even more enjoyable if I spoke Polish for those small moments.
I enjoyed this book but found myself a bit lost at parts, could have maybe used a bit more worldbuilding to tie some of the elements together. Lovely characters tho. Enjoyed the bond between the main 3 characters.

A very good story, but SO short. very questlike, but it was so short that I feel like the emotionally impactful moments didn't hit like they could've had there been more time to connect with the characters. I wanted more relationship development too, because it was so promising but not really fulfilled. I loved learning about the world and the creatures, for how short it is they really packed in a lot of background without feeling overwhelming or like info dumping. The ending did feel correct though, and it was satisfying despite the lack of emotional attachment I had. Hopefully a follow up book will fulfill what I still want from the book/characters at some point.

More a 3.25… I enjoyed this, but I felt like it needed to be longer as half of the novel was explaining the creatures that made up the story. Perhaps if I were already familiar with Polish mythology I would have been more satisfied, but regardless it was definitely a unique story and one that I enjoyed reading!

My favorite parts were the different magical creatures, the Chicago setting that Roth so clearly adores, and the relationships that ended up forming between characters.
The places where this book didn’t hit the mark for me were the pacing, writing style, and overall story arc. I understood why characters did what they did, but they didn’t always make an overarching story with a theme and a conclusion for me.
