A wonderful, eye-opening book about the complicated experiences of growing up between two cultures.

Great read if you want to learn more about the Muslim culture! It’s inspiring, and explains things like Islamophobia in a way that is easy to understand.

I really enjoyed this. I enjoyed Allies exploration of identity and faith. As a woman who grew up atheist but with a Muslim father I related to her a lot. I liked how she embraced Islam and also the dynamic with her family.
However, as a non-Muslim I can’t really speak about the accuracy of the information.

This book very nicely highlights the gatekeeping that exists in every religion. Someone will try to tell you that you are not a real Christian, Muslim, Hindu, etc. if you don't follow xyz rule that was established hundreds if not thousands of years ago by people who claim that a divine being is speaking through them. Thanks, but no thanks.
If you have faith. Good for you. If you don't. That's equally great. It's between you and your god(s) [or lack thereof]. Don't let other people tell you what to believe and don't use your beliefs to hurt others.

The book was interesting and well written, it is clear that the book is about the author and how she (re)discovered her faith and grew from there. It has a mix of diverse characters but mainly sticks to Allie. The romance between her and Wells wasn't my favourite but it was okay. One thing I wish could've been explored more was the Allie's dad's relationship with his parents and why he is so opposed to Islam and Allie practicing yet still calling himself a Muslim. As well, it was a bit problematic a lot of the stances that Allie was taking and not elaborating on them, for people who don't know much about the religion it isn't good. There's much more to talk about but I think I'll leave it at that, it was a decent read.
