If I didn’t do this as a tandem read with Empire of Storms, I think this would’ve been more of a 3.75 ⭐️ read. Having the action of EOS really helped move this plot along. I’ve never been a big Chaol fan, but the development in this book is INCREDIBLE. I actually started to like him towards the end. I really enjoyed Nesryns journey especially because it brought more action to the book. The world building in this series is CRAZY, SJM you are amazing! My head is exploding at the last 50 pgs of every book. Could’ve done with out the explanation of their HVAC system for like two chapters in the beginning, but I understand why that point was really made at the end. Overall this was a very good character building story, I am glad I did the tandem read, otherwise I probably would have been a little bored at times.

Did a tandem read with Empire of Storms with made the reading experience so much better! Not as much action packed, but offered a deep exploration of how the mind works in the healing process. Absolutely magical! It also set up so many explanations to the lore of the series.

I am first and foremost a Chaol apologist and I love that he gets his own book in this series because his character arc deserves all 600+ pages. Honorable mention to Nesryn, because to be honest, she does most of the actual emissary work in this book.

I read this in Tandem with Empire of Storm. And I am SOOO glad I did! If I had to read this book between EOS & KOA, I would have died! & not enjoyed this book at all, I would have been obsessing over what’s gonna happen with the characters from EOS, & not able to take in all this book had to offer.
Chaol & Yrene are so sweet, & I think Yrene is exactly what Chaol needed. & though I rooted for them throughout the book, I felt bad for Nesryn. But when Sartaq came in, I was fully on board with that ship! And Nesryn deserves happiness with Sartaq, instead of being Chaol’s second choice. She was his rebound twice, & I think that just states how much they were not meant to be.
I enjoyed seeing the Southern Continent, & how they treat their people, & I hope that transfers over to the Northern Continent whenever this war ends & the good guys come out on top!

Don’t do the tandem read. The pace of this book is drastically different from Empire of Storms and this book suffers all the down falls. This book is scoped to fewer people and has more emotion driven changes.

It has a few extremely satisfying reveals and a few “well duh” moments. Some of the big reveals were things that I thought were just basic knowledge gained in book 3.

I believe this book suffered for not allowing Choals gradual healing to be associated with his emotional healing. In one day he faced all his repeated patterns of emotional self-abuse. I’m not buying it.

Also a note on the series as a whole, I need more key characters killed to give this war some real stakes. And I need two people to hang out and grow together and not be a couple. Let them be friends, let people miss each other and have the heart grow fonder. Just mix it up.
