Nothing amazing but not too bad either. Much more of a formulaic mystery novel set in the past rather than an historical period-piece including a murder. In the same vein as Eco’s The Name of the Rose, which I had a lot of trouble getting through because it was so slow. Will I continue on with this series? Still thinking on it.

A fun and pacy read set in a time of momentous upheaval.
The novel reads well, is smooth and builds steadily.
The vivid descriptions allow you to picture the location. And in some cases imagine the smell!
An excellent nod to the authors wise use of period correct language. It's not over done so that the reading becomes a historical lesson, but balanced so you learn, are entertained and remain enthralled.
