This book affected me in so many ways, it was so real and heartfelt and it made me come face to face with one of my greatest fears. When we die, who will remember us? How will they remember us? How will it effect everyone around us? All of these are topics discussed in the book. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

I wanted to like this story more.
I was distracted while reading and read most of it in a hospital waiting room so that may have contributed.
I had a hard time liking anyone, I had a hard time keeping track of who was whom with the two main women, I felt there wasn't enough in the book to distinguish them.
The story was good enough but it kind of builds up to a revelation that never comes. The boy goes and confesses but the book never says outright what he was confessing and I couldn't figure it out fully and in the end I didn't care that much.
I liked the scenes with the housekeeper, Cissy, and thought the story was written well.

Paper-thin, largely indistinguishable characters in a drab, cliched setting are dragged through a tedious puppet show in order to say nothing very interesting.

A slow-paced, quiet, simmering novel. I have a feeling I’d love this even more on a second read. It took me a while to get used to the structure as there are so many characters and almost too many to keep track of. Each chapter is told from the viewpoint of a different character, which adds depth to the world, but also creates some confusion. I still loved the varied perspectives.

I listened to the audiobook, and it was a case study in how a bad narrator can absolutely fucking ruin a good story. Listening to this was an absolute slog, even when the story itself was really good. There were some great emotional bits in the story that were totally ruined by the author’s completely monotone voice. I re-learned a valuable lesson: If it says “read by the author,” listen to a sample first, and be prepared to abort and read the text instead if it’s dreadful. Trudging through bad audio is just not worth the time you might save.

Wow! Extremely depressing plot about a large majority of a family dying from a gas leak….., but somehow written in a beautiful way. Each different perspective felt like an amazing short story. If it wasn’t such a depressing plot it would have been 5 stars for me.

This is a great book about a heartbreaking tragedy. However, for some reason, I picked it up thinking this would be one of my all-time favorites and I am disappointed because it didn't leave an impact on me. (This was very unexpected considering what the book is about.)

I'm giving it 3/3.5 stars because I didn't end up enjoying it as much as I would have liked to, though it is still a well-written book.
