Like every Candlemark & Gleam book I’ve read, this is a well-crafted, interesting fiction that’s a pleasure to read. A bit lighter in texture perhaps, a bit less complex and cosier than the other Melissa Scott I’ve read, but still a fine read, with an interesting world and magic I’d like to revisit, politics, friendship, and love, and nothing too distressing, even though there’s risk and danger.

The worldbuilding is solid, the magic system is interesting and the the characters were well written. The mm relationship was established and they felt like a real couple. I really feel like I would like a prequel story of Gil, Envar, and Arak’s adventures before this. My only complaint is that in the beginning of book sometimes it wasn’t clear on what name went with who. Gil and Irichels was used interchangeably and Envar was sometimes called Cass. That tripped me up a little but it pretty much went away.

What a great novel. Solid and interesting characters, intriguing magic system, a different take on curses and demons, an established m/m relationship without scenes proving it cluttering up the plot, and a plot that ties the whole together extremely well. I am delighted that one of my trusted Goodreads reviewers recommended it and I took a chance on it. Also, that cover is perfect.
