3.5 stars but rounding up.

This was so much better that book two!! Thank god!

But I will say their first sex scene… not my favorite but everything else in the book was good so I am not taking too many stars off.

On to book four!

Hawke works for an underground vigilante group that specializes in delivering justice, either by getting the culprit put in prison, or by death. He lost his wife when two people attacked his home while he was out. He's been looking for them for 10 years (I think) and he finally got a lead.

Tate ran away from his horrible father and brother two years ago. It was something he'd been planning for ages. What wasn't in the plan was the three-year-old child he took with him. But when Tate saw that his brother had taken a kid, and that his father wanted to kill him, he had to do something. He couldn't leave a child with the monsters. Two years later, Hawke came up to him and started asking about the family he'd tried so hard to leave behind.

Tate didn't want to help and Hawke had no plan to give Tate a choice. Then Tate got some terrible news about Matty, the little boy who is like a son to him, and a mutually beneficial agreement is form. Kind of.

Tate still isn't happy about things, you see. It had taken him years to finally get freedom and the last thing he wanted was to be trapped again. And with someone like Hawke... who was scary and mean. It wasn't ideal. Still, it seemed to be his best, and only, option so he went with it. The relationship between Hawke and Tate had some ups and downs. In fact, Hawke is the reason for the lower rating.

As a whole, I like both Hawke and Tate and I like when they make appearances in other books. But when the book started, Tate was in such a vulnerable position and Hawke was so harsh. It wasn't fair on Tate the way Hawke couldn't handle his own emotions and was taking it out on him.

Also, there was a scene. The first time the two has sex. And it still bothers me. It didn't feel like a mutual thing. It wasn't rape, I'll say that right now. But it actually hurt Tate. He did consent and he didn't revoke consent at any moment. But it was more because he was desperate for sexual closeness. It was a brief scene and Hawke did try to make up for it, but I didn't like it. It was the farthest thing from hot or romantic and it soured the rest of the book for me to a degree.

The rest of the book was good. I said it before, I actually like both Hawke and Tate. And they work well together. Hawke is not a bad guy. It was just that one scene. Other than that, I liked the book.

Matty, especially, was so cute and my favourite thing was how much Tate loved him. He would do anything for the kid and it was heartbreaking because of the bad stuff that was going on. The three of them made a beautiful family. I also loved Ronan and Seth's part. This was a good book and it's kind of a bummer that I can't rate it higher, but I do recommend it.

Read via KU 3/2018. 5 Stars

Audible 6/2019. 3 stars.

I’m a huge fan of Sloane Kennedy, read through all her books on KU & have purchased nearly all her audiobooks. As always, she delivers angst, drama, & mystery well. These stories are definitely dark and invoke some strong feelings, so they’re not for everyone.

Joel Leslie is hit or miss for me. This one was definitely a miss. Tate has a Southern (supposedly Texan) accent. Unfortunately, it comes and goes during the recording, even in the same chapters. Also, the town Luling should be pronounced “loo-ling” NOT “lull-ling”. Since it’s mentioned 20+ times, it’s quite annoying. Hawke is supposed to be from Wyoming (though, as former military, I could see how his accent could be washed out) yet his accent is all over the place as well. Sometimes it sounds somewhat Boston-esque, sometimes more Midwest, sometimes indistinguishable. Frankly I just wish he hadn’t even attempted an accent if he wasn’t going to stick with one.

Just as good as the first time. Hawke is one of my favorite characters in the series. I loved him SO much more that Ronan in the previous book. His presence always made me feel safe. Him being there, told me that everything was going to be okay. He's a true protector. And the pairing with Tate and Matty works perfectly.

I love this series and freaking love this author... The way she brings to life these men is beautiful. She will take someone so broken and bring them to life and you can't help but sit back and enjoy because you will love every single one ❤️

Hawke and Tate were thrown together by a need for vengeance. Of course it never turns out so simple and for Hawke it was anything but. His emotions and feelings were so raw and real. You wanted to hold him and allow him to break down ugh he hurt my heart. Oh and let's not talk about matty... I loved that kid! Tate was sweet, loyal, forgiving, and just as broken and Hawke but he had a reason to fight back that darkness. I loved the storyline, the love between these characters and I loved getting to see guys from previous books. I can't wait for the next one.

If you like m/m and want a seriously great story not just fun times between the sheets. But guys you can love... Then pick up this series it's fantastic

Beautiful

I absolutely adored Tate and Hawke's story. I loved Matty and all the Marvel references. I loved that Hawke picked love over vengeance and I absolutely loved the fact that he still got his revenge.

This book is so good, but also, in some parts, the fine line of dub con and con can be questioned. But dammit she knows how to write flawed and real characters. The smut is great, but how Sloane keeps drawing me in with her character build is astounding.
