  • This was the perfect graphic novel for Halloween! It's a collection of horror stories by Emily Carroll and I really liked her storytelling, it was haunting and creepy. The only complaint I have is that the stories all ended very abruptly before we could properly unravel the mystery and I was left wanting to know more!
  • The art style is also absolutely stunning and my favorite part of the book! I love how the art adapts to the kind of story that is being told, I thought it was used very uniquely here. I definitely can see myself reading other works by this author as she's such a gifted artist!

Good spooky book! If you're wanting a book that's more spooky-vibes rather than intense horror, this is a great option! Some stand out in my mind more than others, but that's account of my personal taste.

SO glad StoryGraph recommended this to me! If you're like me and go bananas for Over the Garden Wall but are also into darker stories, this is the book for you. I could not get enough of any of the stories, and I found it especially compelling that most, if not all, of them were ultimately metaphors for loss or coping with it. TLDR; this is a fantastic book and you should read it!!!

much better than my previous jaunt into emily carroll’s work but my primary criticism remains: emily carroll is a gifted artist and a mediocre storyteller. this collection did have a better narrative than when i arrived at the castle, but nothing stood out for me personally.

I loved the art style, it was truly beautiful and haunting. But the stories fell short for me. I wanted to love them but their endings often left me disappointed/dissatisfied and felt incomplete.

Very eerie collection of stories. I feel like horror graphic novels can sometimes lean too heavily on gore to get a reaction from readers, this really has very few bloody or otherwise frightening images, but the stories are wound so tightly that you get that shock value regardless.

This was a quick, fun read that I e-checked out from my library on a whim and read in one sitting. I thought the illustrations were easily the best part of the book. The colors and style were beautiful and probably are even more so in person. The stories themselves were short, interesting little fairytales gone wrong, and I enjoyed all of them. I wouldn't say that most of them were particularly scary; I think there was only one story that had an ending that got me.

I think this is a fun read and I would recommend it, but probably only if you borrowed it from your library. The stories didn't have enough substance to merit me wanting to buy this or check it out again, though I do think if there's a sequel I would be interested in checking it out and reading it too.
