Starts where Deathborn leaves off with Nea and Garret going through the portal to the Between to find a cure. They get trapped by their own and each other's memories and find out some of their memories had been suppressed when they were young. They find out the gods have a stake in them and the Usurper of Shadow wants to claim Nea for her powers.

Back home Margot finds Nea's old journals and heads for The City of Stars to better understand what they face.

On the lighter side, we have Declan and all of his remarks about Nea and Garret trying to deny the growing attraction between them.

Glad I stuck with this series. I was frustrated with the first book because there were too many questions and not enough answers. It was well written and interesting enough for me to keep going and I was rewarded by some of my questions being answered. Of course, a few new ones have now sprouted up in their place. I know longer feel like I’m floundering in the series though. My one complaint is that there are still too many minor characters to keep track of. I keep forgetting who is related to who and has what kind of magic. It’s a little annoying. I feel like an index of characters might be useful. I’m really interested in Harvey though, and hope we get to see more of him in the next book.

It just misses 4 stars because I get too attached to one POV that when we switch to another I just wanna go back to Nea!

Brightling expanded the world we know and raised the stakes so much. We get a new country (with an extended map!) and another POV. But it was all much easier to understand now that I had a better handle on who was who.

My coworker was so on board to hear me talk about this every lunch break. He was a big fan of Mateus because his name was so similar to his own. I’m going to have to message him all through book 3, because how could you leave us there?

I was so excited when we got a masquerade ball, because is it really a fantasy series if there isn’t a masquerade ball? 😜

Random Thoughts I Had While Reading:

  • The trees move. Oz or Puffnstuff?
  • Child Nea sick of being told ‘You won’t understand until you’re older’ MOOD. I hated that.
  • I like Penny
  • Pirates!
  • Harvey and Janey are cute
