I received an advance copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads program. It wasn't really my cup of tea which is sad because I love dog stories. Collections of short stories is not my preference reading material, and these stories were depressing. I couldn't even get through them. I was never sucked into any of the stories and was vaguely bored. There are other books higher on my priority list at this point.

I was hoping these animal stories would be heartwarming or funny or uplifting. The book was well written but kind of a downer. The opposite of what I hoped for.

I was a bit disappointed in this book. A couple of the stories were decent, but most were lackluster. I'm not sure whether the writing was amateurish, lazy, or unfinished, but the stories could have used quite a bit of editing. Some of the stories ended abruptly, making them seem incomplete. Perhaps the author was on deadline and hurried this book. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and try another of works, hopefully with better results.

Loved every page! This is the first animal book I've read where all the stories aren't happy, sappy. I didn't realize that this was a work of fiction when I got it. That's ok, because that's the way life is. Jon Katz really knows what he's doing. I would recommend this to anyone who has a deep bond with dogs, or with animals in general.

I really enjoyed this book. True, not all of the stories were happy ones, but hey, real life isn't always happy. The main point it makes is that a bond with your animal can help you through all sorts of times. I especially enjoyed the story about the donkey as well as the one which basically explains how a dog alone spends his day. An enjoyable, quick read for dog fans everywhere.
