It took me a bit too long to finish. But I did it! I finished it! Let me tell you, it was fantastic. Absolutely loved it. The writing was so great. I was fully immersed into this world. Give me the next book please!

DID NOT FINISH

Long winded, loses track of characters in too large of a cast.

This is an amazing work of fantasy, and everything they say is true: Martin is a master world-builder, effortlessly juggling hundreds of characters and subplots and places without bogging us down with details. Features include: typical hilarious fantasy sex scenes and gratuitous breast/lesbian action, so much murder and treachery that by the end you're like, "Murder? Ho-hum. At least so-and-so didn't dishonor the fam!"

The characters are all fairly detestable and disposable, which sometimes works in Martin's favor but sometimes makes me wish I were rereading Lord of the Rings instead.

To an extent, I can understand how some would see this as "grimdark." However, I think that misses the mark.

Yes, there are many moments of anguish, there are grim deaths, and there's no "all of the good guys win" ending going on. But there's also plenty of humor and warmth to be found, especially in the dynamics between different characters.
