Welcome to the Seven Kingdoms! Love, death, war, betrayal, family this books has everything. I have always said that books are better than the tv shows or movies they are adapted to and this book is no different. I don't know why I have never read this book before as I love the tv show. Now that I have finally finished it some things make more sense after obviously being left out of the show. I was worried I would get confused with all the characters but surprisingly I managed to keep up. Onto book 2 now in the hopes that I can read it just as quick as this one.

It took me forever to finish this. The beginning is so slow paced. But it picks up later on. I’ve seen the show, so I knew this was a good story, but god there was so much lore dumping. Despite all that, I did really like Game of Thrones though. I maybe would have given it 5 stars if it weren’t for the Bran chapters. I hate that kid.

I watched season 1 of the show before I read the book. Let's just get that out of the way. I have never read adult fantasy. I loved fantasy books as a kid, and I read them all through my teenage years but when I tried stuff like LOTR, I never really got into it. I was hesitant to pick up the books, I thought that I would rather just watch the series and not get spoiled, but I'd heard too many good things and I am not someone who can resist a good book.

The books - this one and the chuck of the second I have read so far - are fantastic. The characters are complex, there is no black and white, the whole fucking thing is full of gray. Gray, gray, gray. You can love one character and then in the next section hate their guts and then back to love again.

The books are looonnng. And to be honest, I did skim and skip around a tiny bit. I had watched the first season, and some of the characters that I find a tiny bit boring (Ned, Catylen sometimes Jon and Tyrion) I skimmed a little. I am not doing that as much with the second book and I'm sure once I get past where the show is I won't continue.

All in all, they are very worth the read, but definitely a commitment due to their length.
