While I have always loved dogs and will read pretty much anything about them, I have to admit to being a little disappointed with this. I guess it was a little more shallow than I was expecting - full of pretty obvious points I’ve picked up in magazine articles and tv shows over the years, not exactly complicated specialist literature, with some basic anecdotes mixed in. It also veers weirdly into generic "owning a new dog" advice at times, which felt like padding for an already pretty short book. Combine with the repetitive nature of the information and a very American kind of maudlin tone, I found myself skimming a lot.
So I was disappointed because I don’t exactly have high standards for dog books and I love the social media of the woman who wrote it, but it still felt a little anticlimactic.

This book is a science-backed love letter about why we love dogs so much and the physical, mental, and emotional benefits that both humans and dogs get from the relationship. Super easy to read - fun and engaging.

I genuinely love and appreciate this book! The chapters regarding end of life and grief after losing my dear London (a Golden-Lab mix) just two months ago felt like permission to accept all the emotions I’ve continued to feel as normal and reasonable instead of the invalidating thoughts I’d been speaking to myself. It was incredible to have science-backed evidence that so many of my instincts were correct about the mutual relationships I’ve had with my dogs over my lifetime. Overall, this book felt like the ideal balance between stories sharing the humanity of dog-companionship and informative explanations and summaries. Thanks so much, Jen and Stacey, for the love you poured into this book it’s so apparent!
