This was aight, kids probably will like it, only complaint is that i wish there was more baseball in the first third of the book. Fun little flash to the past. Shirley is a good MC.

In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson has Themes. I rather felt like I was reading a mine of lesson plan ideas for a fourth grade combined English and Social Studies class. We've got immigration, race, friendship, inclusion, baseball, Chinese customs, honesty, integration, New York, and dreams. There were some funny situations and sticky situations and it all ends happily.

I read this book to see if it would make a good literature circle for my historical fiction unit in my class, and I was not expecting to like it nearly as much as I did. It has such a powerful message about the opportunities people have in America that weren't always possible, and I found it especially topical given the current political climate. I'm looking forward to seeing if it affects my students as much as it affected me.

Really enjoyed this book. Wish I had read it when I was a kid. Super cute.
