this book was pretty good, all things considered. i felt like the main relationship was developed pretty well over time, and both of the main characters were dynamic. however, i started to hate scottie by the end of the book because of how she treated irene and how she was being petty just because. the ending sort of redeemed it, and i'm a sucker for fake dating, but scottie was kind of a massive bitch towards the end. so just be warned of that if you choose to read it. overall though, it was a pretty good read.
Cute, funny rom com. Honestly just a fun and quick read.
I picked this expecting it to be a pretty surface-level teenage Romcom, but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of emotion the story gets into. This book takes time to explore grief and healing in a way I wasn't expecting for this genre of novel, and it managed to explore those topics without being preachy. Absolutely loved it ❤️
If it weren't so gay, I'd probably think twice about a higher than 2.4 rating. Scottie and her POV were pretty hard to take by the end, especially compared to Irene's glory. I also dislike the kind of flirting Scottie does, in particular Nor did I ever come to understand why Irene would fall for Scottie--. I'm delighted that queerness felt so normalized in this high school, but the high school setting as written was not an enjoyable place to escape to for me this time around.
Spoiler
how 'happy ever after' began with the toxic "I hate you" (a phrase of endearment?? no, no matter the tone) preceding their kiss.Spoiler
was she just out of any other possible women, since two for two of the named queer characters obviously have a lot to resolve? It feels so good to finish a good book after so many months of slump!
This book was excellent with all the ingredients to make me love it: an adorable, witty contemporary, a sapphic fake dating rivals-to-lovers sports romance, with complex and flawed characters that felt so real, an exploration of toxic relationships and the strength necessary to move on.
I've been a little disappointed with YA lately, but this book made me remember everything I always loved and enjoyed in the genre.
Highly recommended!
