Well writte Historical romance! I love the way the females are written.  They are smart and strong willed even though they love their men. The book flowed well and the conversation was well done. Sesily is apart of a team of ladies that secretly punish men that behave badly in high society.  While she is on a mission she runs into Caleb Calhoun, the man she has been in love with for the last couple of years. Caleb has been asked to Spy on Sesily by her very pregnant sister and his best friend. He knows whatever Sesily is up to is dangerous, but he worries that his secret will put her in more danger.

As a 30 year old spinster, Sesily has embraced the freedom and life she has created for herself. Luring men into the shadows to draw out their deepest and darkest secrets all while no one suspects a thing. That is until Caleb Calhoun returns from Boston and tries to tell himself that he’s still not caught up on his best friends’ sister. Until Sesily makes it his business to be all over her secrets. Someone has to keep Sesily away from trouble and it might as well be him but will Sesily accept that and potentially giving up the freedoms she’s comfortable in?

It has been a long time since I randomly picked a book to read but this one caught my eye from the synopsis alone and I’m so glad it didn’t disappoint. I absolutely loved Sesily and Caleb’s story - so many great one liners and I love Sesily’s wit and sarcasm.  If you’re looking for a great historical fiction with some humor and knot in stomach scenes, look no further. The hijinks of Sesily and her friends are fantastic and I love that a band of women are keeping London on their toes.

Favorite quotes - “Don’t tempt me with a delicious challenge.” & “I would walk into fire if it meant seeing you one last time. And I would not hesitate.”

This is my first historical romance read, and I honestly enjoyed it more than I thought I would. If you like stories of women taking down men who go unpunished for their crimes and abuse, you’ll likely enjoy this read! It wasn’t 5 stars for me because while this is the first book in the “hell’s belles” series, there is a lot of focus on Sera and Mal’s characters and relationship, and having not read that book from a separate series I felt like I was missing vital information about the relationship between Sera and this book’s hero, Caleb. That could be viewed as my fault for not researching before picking out this book, but I thought I’d be good to dive in since this is a separate series. There was a learning curve for me in reading historical for the first time, and having this extra level of confusion just made some parts of the book seem slow and unnecessary. But still, a GREAT read. And while I don’t know if I’ll go back and read books from that other series, I’ll definitely continue the Hell’s Belle’s series.

I keep thinking about this book long after having finished it. I think MacLean deserves more credit for writing some of the hottest sex scenes I've ever read, which is saying something, because I read a lot of sex scenes. I love the tensions between the LIs, how obvious it is that they need each other but how unwilling they are to drag each other into their messy lives. I'm a sucker for any romance that wraps up the external conflict through the quick thinking and combined power of the heroine and her weird, cool friends. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Sesily and Caleb, y'all. She is smart, gorgeous, accomplished (in all of the fun ways), and a true scandal. Her crush on her sister's bestie/business partner made so much sense to me, and his by-the-books stoic seriousness and protectiveness (whose love for our heroine is BECAUSE of how *much* she is) is my catnip. The first quarter is largely spent setting up the series, but it doesn't feel like a slog because Sesily and the Hell's Belle's are so dang fun. I can't WAIT for the rest of the series, and I loved seeing these two get together!

Some highlights:

"She turned to leave, to find her carriage and her way home, and console herself with wine and her cat and perhaps summon her friends to her side. They would come. Duchess would bring wine, and Adelaide would bring sympathy, and Imogen would bring fantasies of revenge." HOW FUN ARE THESE LADIES??

"Somehow it was worse than he'd expected. Because love might have reminded him that he should leave her. That he should keep her safe. But need...need made leaving her impossible. Because he needed, too. He ached with it. And he was hers, he always had been. From the moment he'd laid eyes on her. And what she needed, he would give her."

Anyway, read this book!

** while this is a standalone novel, and the start of a new series, is best to read, or be familiar with Sarah Maclean's Scandals and Scoundrels series first, particularly Day off the Duchess**

Squee!! So much to enjoy. Worth the wait for this story. I highlighted so many different pages of my ARC (thanks Avon and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review).

If you are a fan of author Sarah MacLean, you won't be disappointed. The longing. The girl hang. Time with Sesily and her sisters. Easter eggs everywhere.

More detailed review after release date.
