Definitely not my favourite Steinbeck to the date, but solid still. :)

John Steinbeck is among my favourite authors, because of his beautiful stories and memorable characters that evoke the dearest emotions in the readers. His style, his words connect so seamlessly with our imagination, be it the landscape, which is an important part of Steinbeck's stories, or be it the struggles, both inner and outer, that the characters are engaged in throughout the story.

This is a story of the little town of Cannery Row in Western California, centred around Doc, a marine biologist, for whom the people want to do something good. And it is a story, you can say, almost without a plot. Rather it deals with the lives and the symbiosis of the people that inhabit this small ecosystem. Like many of his other books, this highlights the relationship between humans and their environment. And the struggles that people have to face for their survival against the political and economic hostilities. Showing us how we can derive our strength from each other, like a beautiful pool of marine animals.

Least favorite Steinbeck to date. It took about half the book for me to get into it; it was just a bit too disconnected for me. Once the characters were established and an overarching plot started to take shape, I appreciated it more.

I just love John Steinbecks writing. I don't think I've read anything from him that I haven't loved. I liked how all over the place and unconventional the storytelling was here; you can really tell how much fun he is having writing this.
