my first Steinbeck! Loved this book as a reentry into reading for fun post-bar exam. The characters although flawed were each developed and loveable, if only because Steinbeck makes the community they create to be one of a weird love and understanding. There is a weird acceptance of the characters’ flaws and a devotion to each other because of the community they inhabit.

I can never get enough of Steinbeck’s writing. It’s transportive and encompassing like you’ve really travelled back in time and are watching these stories as a real life spectator.

The cast of characters in Cannery Row are sympathetic and full of life. I enjoyed the read. At times it was laugh-out-loud funny and at other times it almost brought me to tears. A wonderful slice of life type story that tries to capture the spirit of a time and place.

This is an easily digestible Steinbeck novel. It's witty, though-provoking, and has a great cast of characters. These characters are set in who they are as people–this isn't a story where you see someone's growth progress the plot. Regardless, seeing the eclectic bunch butt heads, shake hands, and spit at one another is what makes this novel an enjoyable commentary on the human condition.

We've been reading this out loud before bed every few nights over the last several months - highly recommend this method. (Bedtime stories don't have to end with adulthood!)

This book brought me so much joy and there are many moments that are genuinely laugh out loud funny. Leave it to Steinbeck to wreck me emotionally with a little vignette about an unlucky-in-love gopher

Simply wonderful, beautifully human. I wish homeless were like this in real life. I’m underrating this potentially if anything I feel, I already look forward to a future summer reread in which I can glance at the water with a beer while reading.
