“There was an expiry date to being a loser. You could make “bad choices” and muck about until you were around twenty-one, but after that, God forbid you committed any mistakes, deviating from the anointed path, even though life was more like a game of snakes and ladders.”

I really don’t know where to begin in talking about this novella. It was well paced & felt incredibly real and vulnerable. It made me feel a little too seen. 

The novella follows Amelia as she navigates lifes hardships in Mexico City, while mourning the life she could of had if her mum hadn’t gotten sick and dreaming of the life she wants to have on Mars. 

I feel as though this novella ended in the happiest way it could for a real person. The story felt heavy & the heaviness didn’t miraculously disappear with the final chapter, but it did lighten slightly knowing Amelia gets to go to Mars. I always struggle with small disappointment when books don’t wrap things up perfectly, but I also think it is part of what makes them great at the same time. It feels raw & real & messy. In the end, I felt like I was parting with a friend who is partly a mirror of me.
