3.52 AVERAGE

Interesting scenario.

Slightly better than average thriller.

Part of this was just too far-fetched, but I still enjoyed it. On to the next in the series.

Really enjoy this series. Gideon Crew is in pursuit of a terrorist group that takes him from New York, New Mexico and finally the DC area. Along the way he becomes more involved than he wants as he becomes a suspect. Soon Gideon becomes aware of the true plot and it is much more terrifying than even he suspected.

In the end, the confrontation will have a few twits that will surprise most readers and leave all of us fans wanting more.

At times really good but too many silly plot elements.

Man those Preston & Child books are fast reads, especially the new Gideon books. I think it's the frantic pacing and the super short chapters. But the quality is always high, they've never failed to deliver a solid enjoyable read. I'm not really a heavy reader of thrillers, but for these guys, I'll make an exception.

I rated the last (and first) “Gideon Crew” novel of theirs poorly. I know I said I wouldn’t read the next one and I had a bad attitude towards this one already when I predicted the very first line would start with “Gideon Crew…..”, and it did. I tried and thought that I would enjoy this one since after all, these are the guys who wrote “Relic”, one of my all-time favorite books.

But, the other main character’s name is “Stone Fordyce”, for god’s sake. These sound like fake Clive Cussler book characters. I had hoped that the chain saw and cattle prod fight, not long into the book, was not indicative of more general hokiness to come. But there was more with the hero Gideon Crew getting on the back of a horse with the beautiful daughter of another character and riding away from the FBI, who mistakenly think he’s a bad guy. Sounds like a Hardy Boys adventure.

douglas preston and lincoln child are 2 of my favorite writers EVER. cabinet of curiosities is on my bookshelf of favorite books of ALL TIME, along with dickens, austen, mccarthy, etc. that's why this book (and series) makes me so sad.

as someone else pointed out, the book reads like a subpar movie script. it reads like p&c just phoned this one in - being careful to tick all the boxes of the thriller formula. the "idea" of gideon crewe is great. i don't mind what other people have called his implausible skill-set. pendergast is about as implausible as they come, and i adored him from day one, so gideon has my permission to strain the limits of believability, but where is the elegant storytelling? this book felt forced in every way. i still can hardly believe p&c wrote it. i'm ashamed to say i had to FORCE myself to finish this book. and that makes me very sad b/c i love reading more than almost anything, and p&c books are always highly anticipated reads for me.

will i read the next book in the series? of course. THAT'S how much i adore p&c. but, sadly, i'm not looking forward to it at all. :-(

I am a huge fan of these two authors. I absolutely adore their other on-going series about Special Agent Penderghast. The current Gideon series is fantastic.

Gideon’s character is exquisite. He is a smart-ass to the core, wickedly intelligent, and enormously skilled in various areas – including espionage and self-preservation. This novel finds Gideon in a very difficult situation, one which makes him go full-throttle to get out of. He meets many interesting people along the way, and a couple very unlikely allies.

Though Gideon’s investigation takes a turn for the worst, he gets himself out of a massive mess – with a few stumbles along the way. Using all of his skills, and all of his brain power, Gideon manages to clear his name, and outsmart the most experienced and highly ranked men in his field.

What continues to intrigue me is his involved with Glinn and the EES – a black ops agency operating outside of the parameters of the FBI, CIA, Interpol, and whomever else. They possess more intelligence, manpower, and technology than any other intelligence agency known to man. Is Gideon simply their whipping boy? Or is he serving a far greater purpose. We have to wait for installment three to find out!
