Started slowly, but built up a head of steam and really rolled the last half of the book.
I've heard about this series and have wanted to read the books for a while. Was not disappointed. Will check more out.
Another mystery where the protagonist is a hit man. Set in Japan with lots of authentic color. This is a first novel and may turn into a good series. Worth another try.
Pretty enjoyable competence porn about an assassin who gets in over his head. I enjoy reading about people being good at stuff, so Rain's descriptions of how he eludes surveillance and kills people andstuff were fun. The McGuffin, though, was a little too complicated for my taste--I had a hard time keeping track of all the players and didn't really care enough to try to puzzle it out. And after the first few times, I didn't think we needed to hear about all the subway stations where he changed trains--there's a lot of Tokyo-specific detail in here which is probably satisfying if you know the city, but since I don't, it just wound up being a distraction. Still, I enjoyed it and would probably read another in the series the next time I'm in the mood for this kind of thing.
John Rain is a very complex and enjoyable character. He makes his living as an assassin but he has severe personal baggage. He is very good at his profession but there are a wide assortment of people out there that would like to hinder or stop (breathing) him. This series is very enjoyable and the locations add to the flavor of a character that really doesn't belong anywhere.
Love the character, love the detailed settings and really enjoyed the book.
I heard an interview on NPR with him and got curious. Definitely a page turner, and I'll probably read more; but I was not sure I was down with the killer hero concept. For one thing, it's really easy to solve your problems if you just snap their neck in a bathroom. On the other hand, Rain does make a fatal mistake or two, so maybe he grows over time? It read well enough -- and the Tokyo setting was fascinating -- that I'm willing to check more out.
Wanted to like this book more. It was an OK read. Lots of detail about Japan and Tokyo.
More of a 3.5. Good but not overly engaging for me, perhaps I need to look at #2 of series (obviously a lot of folks like this series)it just didn't click.
I did like the not-set-in-America factor, though our hero is 'Merican, and his specialty... nice... the jazz clubs. Much is very clever, the author did a fine job.
