This was such a fun read! I learned so much about West African mythology and African American folktales and loved the discussions of grief, memory, legacy, and history. This is definitely a must-read for anyone interested in mythology and folktales who's here for a good time :)

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!!! I’m sure you folx know how much I love the @readriordan imprint by now... Tristan Strong Punches A Hole In The Sky by @kwamealexander is so damn good. It has:
•BLACK AMERICAN GODS
•The Sassiest Gum Baby in ALL THE LAND
•Terrifying creatures
•Inter dimensional travel
It felt like I went on this journey with Tristan. It is very much a story I needed right now. It deals with grief and guilt so beautifully. As well as that discord that comes with fulfilling family expectations. Does Tristan want the life and path m his Father and Grandfather has or is he going to carve out his own?
I really love the power of stories, not written stories but the oral tales passed down each generation. I’ve been looking up a lot of my own from Trinidad and it’s been absolutely mind blowing. I cannot wait to grab the second book!

Rick's introduction to this book gave me all the feels. I am so glad this series and the whole Rick Riordan Presents imprint exists. This book is phenomenal.

This was an amazing debut and I need to reread it. I loved the mythology of this and how the stories Tristan was told as a kid came to life. This felt the same as reading Percy Jackson but with a different set of gods. I absolutely loved it. I can't wait for book 2.
Gum Baby was the best side kick/partner in crime I have ever met. Every scene with Gum Baby made me howl with laughter. This was a grand adventure and I recommend it for everyone.

Hello, this book is amazing and wonderful and everyone needs to read it. Kwame Mbalia did an amazing thing and brought representation and strength to all Black children with enslaved peoples ancestry. Tristan is such a great character and I loved his narration of this book. Also Gum Baby. I love Gum Baby dearly. She’s the best.
