I really enjoyed [b:The Old Curiosity Shop|429024|The Old Curiosity Shop|Charles Dickens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1332523435l/429024._SY75_.jpg|5246858] throughout. [a:Charles Dickens|239579|Charles Dickens|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1387078070p2/239579.jpg] put his readers through a wide range of emotions, and his writing was spot on in this book. Some of the passages in this book were wondrous.

[a:Charles Dickens|239579|Charles Dickens|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1387078070p2/239579.jpg] hit on themes of good vs. evil, life vs. death, rich vs. poor, and city living vs. country living. He also included sibling rivalries, family relationships, a couple of cute and touching love stories, dealing with addiction and how it effects people you love, and a very memorable set of villains in Daniel Quilp and Sampson and Sally Brass. I also really like how [a:Charles Dickens|239579|Charles Dickens|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1387078070p2/239579.jpg] characterized Dick Swiveller - someone who does a 180.

This novel is proof that magic can come from tribulation.

I loved [b:The Old Curiosity Shop|429024|The Old Curiosity Shop|Charles Dickens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1332523435l/429024._SY75_.jpg|5246858] and would put it up at the top of his best novels. It's really great. 5 stars.

Great book- excellent Dickens story. Has all the parts, all the great characters with their various fatal flaws.
Then there's Nell...then there's Nell...
Of course, don't EVER get attached to the virtuous innocents in this books- we all know that such goodness is not to be brought to ruination by growing up and developing the base characteristics of the common adult. You have been warned.
Quilp is a horror of a villain. He's just awful. His is the feel good comeuppance of the story but you'll have to wait until very nearly the end but you will cheer.
