“A gift. A gift from a queen who had seen another woman in hell and thought to reach back a hand. With no thought of it ever being returned. A moment of kindness, a tug on a thread”

I was skeptical going into this book because I really love Aelin and the idea of reading a book without her was sad to be, but reading in tandem this book lived up to the expectations set by the rest of the series. The lore of the southern continent and the relationships discovered are amazing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Yrene and how Chaol has grown in this chapter, as well as Sartaq/Nesryn

I was a little upset that we didn't hear anything from the main character except for two extra pages at the very end. However, once I got used to the focus on Chaol and Yrene, I started to enjoy the story a lot more. Great book--interesting plot development, great character development, and an amazing tie to so many bits and pieces from the previous books in the series.

og review 2023: 3 stars
This was too long, but I did enjoy reading about some of the characters, I guess? I felt like the big reveal at the end was good, but wish it was like... half the length. Maybe 1/3 of the length.

re-read review 2025: 4 stars
ok. this grew on me this time. I honestly think I was so devastated by the massive cliffhanger at the end if the book prior to this that when I read it the first time, it just felt like something I had to get through. and Chaol was never my favorite. But this time around? I loved the missing pieces clicking into place. I loved reading about the southern continent. I loved reading about Chaol and Nesryn and other very important characters. I still think it drags in parts, but it was honestly a nice break from all the stress. before we go into more and more stress.
