First read in the 1970's, again in the 90's, and then 4 years ago. I believe it still holds up and I enjoyed it as much now , as I did then. The rags to riches saga spans 50 years ; characters grow and mature before the reader's eyes. I read and enjoyed the series.

I read this due to a NYT story on the book and author. What a slog to get through. Point of view changes on a dime. Way too many and too long descriptions of what people are wearing and of furniture. And in the end I had little sympathy for the heroine.

Re-read

My goodness, this was one of the shower paced books I've read this year. It bugs me since there's plenty of good story and deep characters to choose from, but it's needlessly dragged out. Save your time and watch the miniseries.
