Steinbeck weaves tales resembling poetry. His phrases and description so precise that if it weren’t for the local color, it always feels modern. As with Cannery Row, he gives the town a second wind and closure. I appreciate him taking the time to do a sequel correctly and giving characters justice. I dragged out finishing this because I didn’t want to say good bye. If you enjoyed Cannery Row, this will cause you to get attached to the characters all over again.

I hate to say it, but this was a little bit boring. It was as beautifully written as you'd expect from Steinbeck, but honestly that was just about the only thing going for it. Characters who were gripping in Cannery Row were dull in this, and the new characters weren't anything to write home about either. In fact Suzy, the main female character, was downright irritating for most of the book. Which leads to the next problem - the plot. Cannery Row didn't have much of a plot, but it managed to a page turner anyway. Steinbeck gives Sweet Thursday a romance plot between the affable Doc and the half-hearted prostitute Suzy. And I just did not care at all. It was more fun reading about frogs in the first book.

Made me smile throughout, I loved re-visiting old characters, I love Steinbecks style and observations. If you've read Cannery Row and liked it I would recommend carrying on.

One of my favorites!! A beautiful sequel to Cannery Row. I love how Steinbeck can so beautifully write immense character and conviction into the simplest of plots and settings. A wonderful picture of the beauty of humanity amid a broken world.

"- Valha-me Deus!
- O que é? - perguntou Becky.
