i... don't know how i feel about this one. i mainly picked it up because sheila heti has a quote on the back that's like "gets under your skin in the best way." and it definitely did! if anything it stays true to its title and blurb, and if you want to read about the antics of a deadbeat, oft pretentious fuckboy in philly, you've got it here. i dunno more thoughts to come maybe.

Wow, what did I just read? It was a truly unique voice. Entertaining, frustrating, uncomfortable and some passages that floored me and made me think. He has no room for moralizing fiction and doesn’t hesitate to expose the false promises of politics and self righteous liberalism and ideologies that stifle art and call for self-censorship. He also doesn’t spare capitalism. Sean also wrestles with “problematic” ideas and thoughts and is fascinating to watch his character go through it! It’s real life.

In an age where most fiction is very predictable and characters have “all the right ideas and beliefs” or if they don’t, are demonized or stripped down to caricatures and not real humans that have various experiences and ideas, this was exciting and refreshing.

A couple parts of this hit too close to home and made me self cringe (Lil B chapter) but good (especially if he’s actually in on the joke, which I’m not sure he is but benefit of the doubt) anyway.
