This was my very first Stephen King book, picked it out because of the cover and I didn’t want to start with one of the popular ones. I didn’t know what to expect but this wasn’t it.

The pacing of the book starts of slow with lots of characters being introduced but the plot is not really the main focus. From halfway point the plot starts getting more important, for me this killed the vibe a bit. As I hadn’t a clue what I was reading about in the first 45% as I also didn’t read the blurb.

The last chapters are fast paced and action packed which I really liked and this tempo reminded me of a action movie in a way.

It didn’t really feel as a horror book for me more like a paranormal mystery thriller. As there was no movement in the book I felt the tension being built up to make the reader scared.

Interesting read that would make me read more of his books but with a break between reading the next one as the writing style does need some energy.

I went into this book being told it was scary, and even though I didn't get scared scared there were times I was stuck in a state of suspense. Stephen King is the king of thrillers for a reason. I highly enjoyed this book.

I found the beginning chapters to be quite slow, it seemed pointless to describe so many little instances throughout the lot. Only about halfway through did I start to see the genius in King’s form, by describing the seemingly meaningless he made the town feel alive, only to further grab your attention when he starts killing it piece by piece. This was my first book by Stephen King and it definitely left me wanting more.

Fantastic writing, per usual, from Mr. King. Scenes were vivid, characters were full bodied, and the horror was not in short supply. But, let’s be honest, taking on the folklore of vampires is no easy task and I’m not sure anyone can bring that to life in a mere 600 pages.

Good work but not Mr. King’s best work.

Although, I say all this with a grain of salt, I won’t be finished with King anytime soon.
