A masterfully written story but I cannot truthfully say I enjoyed reading it. A book about how internalised homophobia can ruin your own and the people around you’s lives.  It was a poignant story and it was well told, but for someone like me who is tired of seeing queer stories end in heartbreak  it wasn’t at all what I wanted.

Love him and let him love you

I will need the rest of the year to recover from this book... my heart was broken and stitched up and then shattered by this book.

I love the ambiguity of the ending in regards to David's future and the what ifs of if he never left that room. His internal battle with his queerness felt so timeless and equally painful. I don't think David ever fully deserved Giovanni's love, even as Giovanni begged him to release his fears and just let their love BE and EXIST. David would have never let go of his chance at masquerading in a normal American life.
