This was just delightful! I loved the characters, really enjoyed the audio narration, and it was a great mix of familiar and new settings and characters. It was such a fun surprise to be able to make so many connections between the two stories.
I need to go back and re-read Ella Enchanted because I kept trying to compare the two but couldn't remember enough of the details to really make adequate comparisons. I do think I still love Ella Enchanted best but this was a great chance to revisit that universe.

No where near as good as Ella Enchanted. Disappointing.
I never thought thought I'd be back in the world of Frell, but here it is, and it's every bit as magic as it was in Ella. Evie is just as fascinating a character, Lucinda still as annoying, and I loved slowly figuring out the connections between this story and Ella - although this one stands completely alone, so you can read it without knowing anything about Ella. A fantastic read, and I hope to return to Frell again another time.
Receiving an ARC did not affect my review in any way.
I wouldn't endanger anyone else in this quest. I'd go alone. If I succeeded, I'd be welcome anywhere, at least for a while, even as an ogre. I could live at home again and wouldn't have to eternally miss Mother and Wormy.
When I rejoined humanity, I might save someone whose gratitude would progress to love. Then, if I could set aside the memory of Master Peter, I might return the feeling, because saving someone's life was almost as good as drinking a love potion.
Yes! I would go to the dragons' Spires. If I died trying to get purpline, my end would sadden only two people, neither of them myself.

As a child I loved Ella Enchanted so I wanted to give Ogre Enchanted a try. Evie literally has no plan and should have figured out that she wouldn't have been accepted by society as an ogre earlier. Lucinda is literally so dumb, someone needs to teach her a lesson so see stops giving people her "gifts". I was not expecting an epidemic to be mentioned which was shocking. Did not need that harsh reminder of the real world.

Ogre Enchanted is a prequel to [b:Ella Enchanted|24337|Ella Enchanted (Ella Enchanted #1)|Gail Carson Levine|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1410727190s/24337.jpg|2485462]. It follows a young healer named Evie who is turned into an Ogre by Lucinda. This is Evie's punishment for refusing a marriage proposal from her best friend Wormie. Honestly, I found the story to be rather slow in many places, and it was hard to not roll my eyes frequently at both the way Evie talked and at her antics as she believes herself to be in love with a person she meets as an ogre. I admit it didn't help knowing who that person was. I do wonder how readers who are experiencing the world of Frell for the first time in this book will feel about the world and characters. Unfortunately, I can't undo my years long love of Ella Enchanted and view it as its own thing.
This is a weird book and not a particularly good one. The highlight might be seeing younger versions of a handful of characters from Ella Enchanted, but since we know the outcomes of those characters that also takes away any shred suspense this story could have had. For most of it, I wished there was more detail so I could imagine things better, but there were also numerous occasions that I was thankful for the lack of detail (Giant being eaten alive by ogres, collection of dragon pee for medicinal purposes, main character eating raw carcass of sheep, heads on pikes etc.)
Despite the mess that this book is, I did like the central character. However unrealistic the teenage medical prodigy thing might be, I liked how she was always thinking scientifically and almost taking notes as she learned stuff.

Although this is listed as 0.5 in the Ella Enchanted Series this is a full-length novel suited to 9+ age group. Imagine if your fairy godmother thought they were helping but in reality they are just causing chaos, misery and a whole lot of stress. Imagine getting turned into an Ogre just because you didn't want to get married at 15! And then having only 62 days to find someone to propose to you while you look, smell and eat like an ogre, so you aren't stuck like that forever!!
Lots of fun and Levine plays with all those "fairytale" tropes in this story for kids who love

I found this incredibly frustrating? It felt really rushed and too long all at the same time. It was predictable. The ending just wasn't satisfying, especially since it was always going to happen as expected. Still, it was engaging enough to read and finish. The best part was the dragons, and it was never followed through on.
Listened to this book with my kids age range 13-4. It was way too lovey dovey and I don't mean graphic just that everything was constantly about lovey-tingly-ness.
Also, a bit graphic what with ogres eating a giant right in front of us.
Common sense media said ages 8+. Not my recommendation.
