I read Ella Enchanted last month and then found out there was this book. It seemed like I started the book and the next think I knew I was done. The book catches your interest and holds it. I liked that the character didn't want to get married and had reasons why with all the fun to follow because a Fairy didn't think that was good enough. If you like Ella Enchanted you will like this book. I would recommend it as it was a fun, enjoyable story. I don't know why but won't let me mark four stars for this.

Eh. I hoped this would at least sort of deconstruct the necessity of early heterosexual marriage but ok
adventurous funny lighthearted reflective medium-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

If you loved Ella Enchanted as a kid, then you don't need me to tell you how excited I was for this prequel! While Ogre Enchanted can stand on its own, I definitely loved reading it having already read Ella Enchanted. Ogre Enchanted brings you back to curses and fairy godmothers. We're reminded about how fickle and self-absorbed some fairies can be. In Ogre Enchanted Evie is a healer who is the victim of a fairy who loves proposals and weddings. Turning down her best friends ends up in Evie being cursed as an ogre who now needs to receive a proposal to be turned back into a human. Except now as an ogre Evie people only see Evie as an ogre and don't bother trying to get to know Evie. They are full of prejudices and Evie has to fight against people's expectations to be seen as herself.

This one fell a little flat for me.

Very cute

3.5*

Not as good as Ella Enchanted, the main character didn't quite capture my love and imagination like Ella did (or Char, let's be honest) but this provides background that makes that book that much more fleshed out.

Of course, this is not as good as Ella Enchanted , which is one of my favorite children's books EVER. But I really enjoyed reading about the earlier generation of Kyrrian characters and about the relationship of Ella's parents (which is definitely more complicated that anything that showed up in the other book). Evie was a charming, if somewhat boy-obsessed, narrator. Though in her circumstances, maybe the boy obsession can be a little bit justified. A fun, light, and charming read.

This was a tough read. I loved Ella Enchanted, and loved the world that Gail Carson Levine has created, but this one had some problematic messages, that I felt would deter me from handing to a child. This book felt older than the 8-12 age range as well, as it is about a teen being forced to marry, or else remain an ogre forever (she rejected a proposal and is being punished by the fairy, Lucinda). The main character goes through the book thinking that every person she meets could be the love of her life, even when their character attributes aren't great, or she barely knows them. She also flirts with the idea of using magical persuasion to convince someone to propose...

I understand that the point of this book was to talk about real love versus perceived love, and good versus bad people? However, I feel like it could have discussed these themes in a better way.

I still feel that Gail is a wonderful writer, and you can still tell from this book. It was very well written, with great details and imagination. The characters were also really well fleshed out. I also listened to this book on Libro.Fm & the narrator was great.

All in all, I just felt that this book could have been better & also maybe should have been marketed as Young Adult (for teens who want to read YA, but need something without anything inappropriate)?

I'd love to discuss this, if you've read it. Let me know what you think!

This was a cute book -- I listened to it on a whim and I actually enjoyed it. I found myself wanting to get to the ending because I didn't know who she was going to pick. The more I think about it, the more I don't think I've actually read ELLA ENCHANTED. If I did, it was a long time ago and I remember literally nothing...pretty much nothing.

That said, I went into this pretty blind which I am assuming most people didn't. So I was not an ELLA ENCHANTED fangirl when I read this. So it was cute; I knew not to expect much more and I didn't. It was a simple plot line with basic characters. But the plot kept having so many twists and turns I couldn't really predict how it was going to end. I knew she was going to go back to being human but I didn't know how. I kind of wished we had a FROZEN situation and there was a weird loophole out of it all. But a basic marriage proposal was okay too.

I got the sense that this was a way to expand the world which was fine. I travelled merrily along the adventure and was fine with how it went along. I think that is what kept me going most of the way was the continuous introduction of new challenges and characters.

Conclusion: Don't need to own but I enjoyed it and would recommend
