Superb first half, practically perfect. Absolute masterclass in technique. Boring second half.

It was ok. It to me didn't feel like a Lovecraft in the 2nd half and I wanted more cosmic horror. It felt to me more like a cult horror where it's creepy rednecks on a farm that manipulate a guy into getting drunk and going crazy.

A chilling marriage of Lovecraftian horror and Southern Gothic. Fred Chappell goes into the subtle, metaphysical horror of Lovecraft instead of breaking it down into a variation of good versus evil. The result is an unnerving, psychological/spiritual breakdown that we get a front-row seat for.
Nothing is explained away, and it manages to be shocking without being graphic. An expertly done bit of Lovecraftian horror.

Weird, frustrating, and more than a bit terrifying.
