Dungeon Crawler Carl

If the MMORPG from hell met Survivor Intergalactic met a bigger, dumber action movie, that would be this book. It has the same sort of acute media awareness that Hunger Games has, only with a lot more cartoonish violence and pop culture video game references that will probably age poorly but makes a lot of fun now. Carl and Donut are well likable despite their tropey origin stories, and the hints of byzantine politics underlying the smash and loot situation are interesting.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

I really wanted to get through this, but by chapter 14 I just kept forgetting about reading this one. There was so much potential here, but I felt the world building was over explained. I didn't really care about every loot box he got (like maybe here and there when it was important - but it got so repetitive). I could easily visualize stuff and layers, but just could have moved past some of the explanation.
Sadly, I also didn't really enjoy when the cat started talking
. This had potential to be funny - but honestly Carl just drove me nuts.

Enjoyed this entry to the world. It reads just like playing a video game, and it made for a lot of fun in the audiobook experience. The production was tons of fun and I commend the team for their hard work in making a colorful and intricate world that feels real. Lots of little choices made huge impacts and elevated the experience.
I didnt have an anticipation of pace for this book going in, so I expected it to move quicker than it did. Im okay with the slower pace after realizing this story plays out over the series, and wasnt just the plot of this book alone.
Characters were tons of fun. Carl plays off Johnny Bravo style hilarity, and Donut was simply a pleasure.
Id like to see how this story builds as it goes. It made for an easy listen. It has the potential for many interesting directions.

Made me feel like I was in a video game and I enjoyed every second of it! Can't wait to see what happens next :D
