As the title suggests, this story has a very dream-like quality. You don't really get to know any of the characters well enough to feel a strong connection, which I usually dislike, but the story was interesting enough and well-paced to keep me turning the pages. It was an easy, enjoyable read for the summer, but I don't think it will stick with me long into the future.
THAT WAS GREAT! 4.5 stars.
I agree with other reviewers that the ending didn't quite match up to the caliber of the rest of the story and while it was a full "resolution" it felt a little undercooked.
This book was the marriage of two movies I love: Inception and Contagion. It also has a bit of a dystopian zombie/patient 0 feel even though there are no zombies what-so-ever.
I have no idea how this book ended up on my library holds list (I was surprised to get the notification it was ready for me) but I AM SO GLAD IT DID. I think I might have accidentally requested this when I meant to request [b:Strange the Dreamer|28449207|Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1)|Laini Taylor|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1519915549s/28449207.jpg|48158509] which is actually a perfect title for this story.
SUMMARY: It starts with a college girl who doesn't wake up. She's not dead or in a coma, she's asleep. Soon other students start falling asleep too... it quickly becomes an "epidemic" but is isolated to this area of California. Hundreds of people are "sleeping" and nothing is waking them up. Most people stay alive through this, only dying if someone doesn't find them in time (they would succumb to dehydration eventually without aid). After a while, one of the "dreamers" wakes up, then others do. They all have varying dreams. Some people dreamed of the past, some of the future, some of loved ones or they had nightmares. The story centers around several people in this town and their experiences as this plague happens.

Interesting concept but felt like how it was structured undermined what was compelling about the story.
Hmmm. Well written and somewhat mystical premise. Told from the 3rd person it provides a wide overview over a wide variety of characters. I really enjoyed this book - it makes you think about what you would do if found in similar situations. Would you be the hero, shut in, helper, or the planner? Would your dreams be of the past, future, present or another life altogether?
I’m enjoying the writing, but the story itself…is dragging 100 pages in. Nothing much is happening, just the same thing over and over again, and so far just establishing the feelings and reactions from about four different perspectives. I’m intrigued as to what’s happening, but not enough to wait on for something new to happen.
Magical, sad, great voice. But ultimately what’s the point?
I really enjoyed reading this book, but the ending fell short for me.
I loved this - different than anything I’ve ever read. The writing was so melodic and lovely. Wow, what a cool book.
This book was too reminiscent of the Covid-19 pandemic. It didn’t feel immersive or intriguing because I’d lived almost the EXACT scenario.
