This book was difficult to put down, highly engrossing from the beginning.
inspiring mysterious medium-paced

I wouldn't call this novel about a sleeping epidemic particularly moving or deep. It did, however, keep me interested throughout; a true page-turner. A quick and entertaining read.

Soft 3. Good enough story and paced well enough to hold my interest. Vignette style of writing made the book itself seem dream like, but also served to keep me disconnected from the characters. Frequent hackneyed phrases. “This here, this is the breaking of a heart.” Barf. Some people will adore this book. For me it was just so so.

ETA: dropping to a 2. I was trying to be overly kind before. Interesting premise could have been handled MUCH better.

Not the best book but definitely a conversation starter for book clubs. The author created too many characters and some that were stereotypes. I am giving it three stars but if you would like an easy read- with of course, a pandemic, give it a try.

3/3.5? The writing was everything

I loved The Age of Miracles so I was excited to read KTW's latest. Another Goodreads reviewer described this perfectly - as slow-pocalypse. The writing is absolutely beautiful...I could have underlined this whole book. The characters are vivid and fully formed and the story is compelling and inventive. Wonderful.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for my honest review.

Lyrical, moving, magical.

The first half of this book was captivating - the different perspectives and sense of dread and a feeling of anxiety as the sickness insinuates itself in myriad ways.

And then...it just keeps going. Like the end of the film version of Return go the King, too many endings.

Still and all, some moments of beautiful and hypnotic prose scattered throughout.

Little side bar...I found the fetal development passages pretty heavy handed. And the bulk of the female characters were given far less interesting narratives than those of the male characters.
