"the valley of Apan claimed me like a summer twilight"
"The buildings were muscular and ungainly, the awkwardly splayed limbs of a beast frozen halfway through adolescence."
The writing isn't good. The similes are abundant and odd. Thus, the descriptions are not intuitive and my reading experience feels clunky and awkward. The foreboding atmosphere feels more defined to the character's thoughts than my own.
Book: "The garden has dead plants and some brown dirt."
Main character: "Why didn't I feel safe...? A delicate tremor, the tremble of a Monarch's wings, flutters in the back of my throat..."
Me: "Sounds like they need to hire a gardener."
