It has that rare combination of heartbreak and humour, hope and loss, that the emotional experience of the story feels just right. The novel says it best with these lines, near the end:
“There is so much happiness in the world. There is so much sadness in the world. There is just so much in the world.”
Coyote is one of those characters who leaps off the page. She is something else, but never feels like a caricature. And her relationship with Rodeo, her dad, is beautifully shaped and conveyed.
This is a story about grief and finding your way after losing it. It’s about unexpected community and the surprises that life sends our way (like a perfect cat named Ivan, for one).
I’d say the only area where I wanted more was in the characterization of Val and Lester. They didn’t come to life as completely as the other characters. It’s tricky with an ensemble cast and a shorter book, but I do think someone with Gemeinhart’s skill could have done more with those two characters, even though they were side players.
I underlined many lines in this book. I’m glad I own it so that I can go back and learn to love it even more.
Moderate: Child death, Grief, and Death of parent
Minor: Car accident and Domestic abuse
