The writing is so rich and beautiful. I couldn't put it down.
This was a great piece of fiction, which, like many of the books of it's era, was written to try and express philosophy through the lives of the characters in the novel. Not exactly a light read, but I'd highly recommend it anyways.

I’ve got to give it 5 stars because I finished it and it did keep my attention.
I was not prepared for how philosophical it was. I think you could have cut the book in half if you took out all the political and philosophical debates and I still would have loved the book. That’s potentially why it’s so famous though.

While not my #1 Russian writer, this was a profound story, I finally decided to Audiobook on commutes. Beautiful, complex characters and oddly, I probably found Anna the most annoying. The book does a good job in getting one's philosophical juices flowing on questions about life, priviledge, morals, and most of all meaning and futility of life itself (i.e. Levin's thoughts). Highly recommend.
3.5. This is a hard one to review because I did put it down a few times. My feelings of it have been quite mixed. On the one hand I love stories that focus on the minutiae of everyday, which this had to no end, however I felt it sometimes focussed too much on the detail of a specific scene/moment which took away from the overall story coming together. I suppose that was the point; the interconnected trials and tribulations of Russia’s upper echelons in the midst of a crisis.
Quite honestly the parts about farming and land ownership I found most riveting, it felt like they had a bit of pace and excitement to them.
A rambling review, but overall I’m glad I finished it.
