I absolutely loved this book. I love Tolstoy's writing. I just couldn't put it down. The characters are complex. This book is a tale of pain and love. The constructs of the characters carefully accentuate Tolstoy's message that love is important but also crucially that society persecutes many just for small acts.
Definitely recommend it. 5/5 stars.

I liked this far more than I thought I would and, surprisingly, felt a great deal for Anna.
I read this as part of the 2021 PopSugar reading challenge (The longest book (by pages) on your TBR list). It was my last book to read in the challenge. This book was extremely, excruciating long, not just the number of pages but the content. I was determined to finish even though I became easily distracted and disinterested in the men and the women of the novel. The story drifted between characters, events, and cities. I found it difficult to remember who was who. I was never so glad to finish a book.
My favorite (non-spoiler) quote: “I’ve always loved you, and when you love someone, you love the whole person, as they are, and not as you’d like them to be.’”
Definitely a classic for a reason. I found it more readable/entertaining than War & Peace, but still gave me a lot to think about. In particular I think it shows a really interesting spectrum of humans, and how love can be a tremendous source of both happiness and pain.
