DID NOT FINISH: 75%

I read the book a couple of years earlier, and this time I just stopped reading altogether for a while and never got back into the story.

"Een Russisch spreekwoord luidt: 'Andermans ziel is een en al duisternis'. Tolstoj dringt echter door tot in de verste uithoeken van andermans ziel. Veelal is het licht dat hij er laat schijnen liefdevol, soms ook genadeloos." (Uit het nawoord van Lourens Reedijk)

Tolstoj lezen vraagt wat geduld, maar ik heb erg genoten van de eerlijkheid van deze alwetende verteller. Een onverwachte verademing.

A little bit difficult to get through, but a compelling read. This book is rich in culture and philosophy, and some amazing character development. As I talked about it with my wife, it was interesting to find that the parts enjoyed the most, were the parts my wife found boring, and vise versa. It takes a truly talented writer to write to such a broad base of audiences. That said, this book will likely interest people who enjoy Literature with a capital "L". It is not for the casual reader.

It took me months to finish this book because it didn’t hold my interest, but it was still worth the read!! The plot lines were all interesting, but they all played out a little too slowly for my liking. There was a lot of positive and negative character development which I really appreciated.

Why is Levin always vexed and perplexed only once

new neural pathways have surely been formed

With the blurb saying how loved and memorable the character of Anna Karenina is, I was surprised by how little she was in this. This seemed more to be a story for Levin (who rarely gets much screen time in adaptations), and I was not disappointed by that. Levin was one of the more interesting characters, and my personal favourite perspective to read. His fickleness and constant questioning of his behaviours and choices felt incredibly human, and his inability to stick to his revelations made his development compelling.

I loved the complexity of each of the characters and I would say this is some of the best character work I've seen. All have their charm and perniciousness that gives you whiplash as to your feelings towards them.

Overall, this portrayal of family, love, and life is exceptional and littered with profound internal thoughts that bring the characters to life in a way I rarely see.

An interesting book that I both loved and hated a different stages. I think Tolstoys righting while obviously a genius was hard to stick with some times it’s so long and so tedious and some points especially with Levins farming I could not care in the LEAST but it’s also so interesting to see that even with the time and location differences to were I am placed you still see the thoughts anxieties emotions ex that you also feel yourself. I also liked the characters Anna was sometimes really annoying to me at times but I was shocked and sad at the end when she committed suicide and regretted it. It then switched focus for a long time on Christianity which I liked in the sense that it focussed on the happy ending of Kevin and kitty and a sort of hopeful ending but wasn’t what I expected. Overall a rollercoaster, LONG but I definitely got some good out of reading it.
