i really, really like the concept of this book and series. i like the plot, the world building, the pacing, and the characters have flaws and seem genuinely interesting. the language is very intense and unnecessary. the n-word, especially. “blah blah roland is racist not stephen king blah blah” if a white man has to write the n word, hard r or otherwise, to get across the point that a character is a piece of shit, then they’re not very great at conveying anything? “it was a different time and those terms were more acceptable” OH so now you and stephen king are racist/sexist/etc GOT IT.

This book was wild. We permanently changed the status quo within the first ten pages and the foot never really left off the gas from there. I had to put the book down more than once because it was so tense it was driving me crazy. I have no idea how King managed to keep the tension going like that. It was a series of spinning plates that kept you at the edge of your seat just praying none of them fall. I started sneaking pages of it in the car when I know reading in a car makes me violently ill, but I just had to keep going. It felt like every time I had to stop was exactly when something gasp-worthy occurred.

And yet.... I was not expecting to read a book that would challenge The Bone-Doll's Twin for its title of "Most Racist Depiction of a Black Woman in Fantasy" so soon, but this book was gunning for it. Detta is SUCH an over the top racist stereotype that both the narrative and the characters in the book stop to look at the reader and go "no Black person in the history of the world has even spoken or acted like this." But then why write her like that at all?
We don't even get a good explanation as to WHY Detta spoke and acted like that!
Also, Holy Insta-Love Romance Batman! One of my least favorite tropes. (+ I get it King, you hate fat people, you hate them so much, can we please move on?)

And yet, like Roland, I'm compelled to keep going. You've sold me on the idea of the Tower, and I want to know.
