In an effort of trying to catch up with Sami literature, I picked up “A land of snow and ashes” and I didn’t like it.
It is set during and after the Second World War in northern Finland and follows the story of the Nazi concentration camps built there from different point of views.
To make it short: Firstly it was very grotesque (don’t eat while reading this), it was confusing and gave little to no actual information about the camps and the relation to the Sami people, and lastly it had a problematic undertone.
It feels written from an “above perspective” in terms of the parts talking about racism. Once again I feel like Sami people was written by someone else and written poorly.
Honestly it wasn’t anything I liked about it. Don’t waste your time reading this book!

This was a different picture of WWII than I had previously read anything about, and I appreciate the new perspective. It's rough reading; sad, even grotesque at times, with the worst of human behavior brought to light, but also beautiful in describing landscape, and the resilience of tradition and community.
