A poignant book about befriending a fellow writer, rower, and dog lover. Then she died of cancer.

It used beautiful language to describe the little moments that add up over years to a heartfelt friendship. And then the little moments of grief as the person is dying. Mundane details about the temperature, the sunlight, errands.

OMG, I liked this much better than I thought that I would.

This is the story of 2 women who found each other because of their dogs. They had a wonderful and fulfilling friendship. This is a true story and the book starts out telling you that one of the women dies of lung cancer.

I typically do not care much for the memoir books. They always seem a bit egotistical to me. The books are filled with many "I" and "Me" phrases. While this book is no differentin this respect, it is also a warm and wonderful story.

I want to feel the same kind of friendship that Gail and Caroline had. I want to feel the same kind of love and respect that they had for one another.

Gail, you did Caroline proud with this book and I am glad that I read it!

Didn't grab me like I had hoped.....perhaps because I am not a huge animal lover.....could not really relate to what seemed like an obsession for these women....I just didn't relate to much in this book......perhaps I wanted more about the illness and less about the dogs..???? I found it easy to read...and I did want to keep going......I guess I just wanted more......

I used to think this was an awful story -- shameful and dramatic and sad. I don't think that anymore. Now I think it's human, which is why I decided to tell it. ~ Gail Caldwell

I won this book through the Giveaway and the only thing I didn't like was how long it took me to actually sit down and start reading this book. The way Gail opened up and shared this intimate story with all of us was breathtaking. The word that came to my mind when reading this book was elegance. I do not know what to say other than "read it". Your soul will thank you.

Thank you Gail.

"Death is a divorce nobody asked for; to live through it is to find a way to disengage from what you thought you couldn't stand to lose."
"The real hell of death is that you're going to get through it."

Incredible.
