I received this book as an ARC for my honest review.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and I'd definitely continue reading the series. It was a bit predictable at times but that's probably just because I read alot of fantasy.

There are some things I didn't quite understand. Near the end when they were being attacked it mentions salamanders but doesn't explain what they are. I just started to assume they were some kind of soldier. The main character has very potent healing abilities but can't heal her own mothers' sickness and I'm sure there's a reason why that we'll find out later but I was really confused as to why it wasn't addressed until the very end when she needed to heal her mother and said it's never worked on her. But those were the only things I couldn't make sense of.

I did enjoy the story and the plot. I loved the characters, especially Dagan. It did feel like something was missing but I'm not sure what that something is. The ending was the absolute best part of the story, I enjoyed the twist and was even a little shocked by the betrayal.

A Dawn of Onyx is kinda just…there. It’s a grab bag of most of your standard fantasy romance tropes and character archetypes—all presented in a way that feels like the various TVTropes pages were used as step by step instructions rather than a basic definition. Though, honestly, I’m not sure there’s enough distinguishing characteristics to the characters or the world to pull off anything more dynamic.

Honestly, A Dawn of Onyx is not bad so much as it’s deeply forgettable, even while reading it. It feels kinda like a faded impression of a fantasy romance you read a while back—not one you adored, but one that you had some fun with. I don’t really recommend it—there are much better, more creative options for fantasy romance out there—but if you’re looking for something with a very low initial investment, you can definitely do worse than A Dawn of Onyx.

It was a good book, but the reveal of her being fae felt pretty random. There wasn't much buildup, and it didn’t have that big ‘OMG, no way!’ shock factor. It was a bit weird, but you know me—I can’t resist fae kingdom enemies-to-lovers romance tropes, so I’ll definitely keep reading the rest of the series hehe.

I crushed this book in a single sitting (luckily I had a 10 hour flight as an excuse) but this first book was right up my alley. From Arwens character development into a stronger fighter, the yearning between her and Kane is top tier, the magical monsters, the betrayal
from childhood lover boy and Kane not only being fae but the son of the tyrant king!? Oh and the fae can shift and kane was the dragon she rode at the beginning of the book!?
it has me so ready for the next book I can not wait to see how Arwen fucks shit uppp and curious to see how her siblings and other side characters grow with the series.
