Pleasant, quick read. For a novella, the author has already immersed us into a world far more interesting than most.

Binti's personal journey as the first person of a secluded and traditional society, to go to space is the most compelling aspect of the novella. In spite of her ambitions and issues with her unsupportive family, she still wishes to remain connected, and recognised as part of the Himba people.

Critiques for the text would be a little more descriptive imagery on the appearance of objects and creatures with no real world counterpart. I also could not sympathise or like the Meduse, for despising humanity for being violent, and yet made victims of innocent children who posed no threat. Binti describing them as beings of honour was baseless.

Ultimately, Binti is a story for everyone tired of reading the same heartless fantasy, and I will most definitely be reading the next installment.

Binti is the first of the Himba people ever to be accepted at Oomza University, the finest university in the galaxy. But in order to take advantage of the scholarship, she’ll have to leave her family, her village, her entire way of life, and travel among strangers (her fellow students) who neither understand nor respect her traditions.

This is a coming-of-age story, an adventure, a buddy road-trip, and a space opera all in one small package. I loved Binti. She’s resourceful, mentally and physically strong, a loyal friend, a compassionate person, and a canny negotiator. I loved the way that she slowly developed a relationship with Okwu, the young Meduse warrior (?), carefully observing and strategically offering information and help once she understood the issue.

Science fiction is not my favorite genre (understatement), but I might read more of this series.

Binti is a wonderful introduction to the world that Nnedi is creating. Here we are introduced to Binti and an alien species known as the Meduse. There's a lot that goes on here within the short amount of pages, but if you move on to the other two books, Home and The Night Masquerade, this introduction story is worth it.

What a unique story fit into such a small book with few words. I really enjoyed Binti and the journey she is on.
