I like the premise of the story more than the actual writing. I don't know it just didn't fit the setting and these characters ( especially gods i was expecting more ethereal beings and not someone who uses the word badass). I will probably read rhe second book so I'm not dismissing it completely

An okay book.
Apollo and Hyacinthus’ story is one of my favorites in Greek mythology. When I found out about this book, I was excited to read it. Not as good as I thought it would be. I feel like nothing happened at all. The characters went on walks every chapter to talk and get to know more about each other… and that’s pretty much it. The romance did pick up towards the end and the plot kicked in just as the book ended — which was annoying. I might pick up the rest of the series and see how that goes. Hopefully the next book will have more going on.

i think temi was the best character. - and i won't lie, i thought there was going to be romance between her and pip.
this book was quick and easy to read. however, sometimes the descriptions seemed lacking. like they were simple. and the dialogue sometimes felt like it was missing context - like i showed up in the middle of someone else's conversation.
i like alternative POV's. but having it in first person made it confusing, and i often did not know which character we were talking about.
maybe it's just me, but i did not feel any chemistry between hyacinth and apollo. - if it was supposed to he enemies to lovers... where was the teasing? the hatred? the angst? - imo it felt like they were friends the whole time (and they slowly made up after a fight.)

Apollo is yet to be a God and honestly, he's not interested in becoming one. His father, Zeus, issues him an ultimatum: ascend or spend the year with his pompous rival, Prince Hyacinth. After choosing the second option, the soon-to-be God of the Sun finds that there is more to Hyacinth than he originally thought.
This is an enemies-to-lovers Greek mythology re-telling that, based on vibes alone, feels a lot like if Red White and Royal Blue and Neon Gods had a secret love child. I was expecting something a lot darker from just looking at the gorgeous cover, but A Veil of Gods and Kings was an easy and relatively light read.
I felt as if the first third of the novel was a bit dry and I would have loved for some more developed world building to be explored. I really would have loved to know more about the process of ascending at this point in the book and perhaps even explore a bit more of Apollo and Hyacinth's rivalry.
I loved both Pip and Temi as characters. They are both badass in their own way but I thought their growing friendship was lovely to witness. I did, however, find myself wanting to read about Apollo and Hyacinth more at times.
Overall, A Veil of Gods and Kings was an enjoyable start to the series, however, I hope more of the world building aspects are explored within the next book.

The book is out now!
A Veil of Gods and Kings is the story of Apollo and Hyacinth, but it would be better if you treat it as a totally new story and worldbuilding with a loose inspiration from Greek Mythology. Apart from the names and some very basic lore, the author hasn't kept much from the original myths and crafter her own story - this isn't a criticism, you'll enjoy the book much more if you don't expect to see a spin of the old myth.
The book is a slow starter for me and took a while to grow on me. It picks up after the 20-25% mark and the progress of the relationship between Apollo and Hyacinth as well as the side plot of their sisters is well-paced and a pleasure to read.
And of course in the final part the stakes are upped and the basis for the rest of the trilogy is set, and this caught me by surprise!
