I really enjoy V.E. Schwab's writing, and I definitely enjoyed the second book more than the first. I know that's an unpopular opinion, but I felt I'd gotten to know and care about the characters more by the end of this one than the first. I know why some people consider this to be YA; it definitely has many of the tropes. But I think it is fair to consider it a fast-paced adult fantasy series.

Unfortunately, my biggest issue with this series is Lila and her "not like other girls" attitude. I adore Rye and Kell's brotherly bond. I love them so much! I enjoy Holland as a morally grey villain. It's difficult not to feel for him and abhor his actions. That's good shit. I even decently enjoy Kell and Lila's romance. But god... I wish Lila would shut the fuck up about being "one of a damn kind" and thinking poorly of other women. Come on, girl! It just feels like internalized misogyny. I don't completely hate her character. In fact, I think she has a lot of potential. I hope it gets more flushed out in book three (though I've heard otherwise :() and through the second series. I like that she's a scrappy orphan who's had to fight tooth and nail for everything she has. I like her as a pirate and her relationship with Alucard. But it's irritating how often she talks about how awful dresses are, how boring balls are, and how she just wants to stab someone. She doesn't need to be a girly girl, but she shouldn't hate other women.
