This book was a huge let down for me. The premise is great, and I love a second chance romance. But, I had a lot of problems with this.

First, this author seriously needs a better editor. There are tons of continuity and plotting issues that yank the reader right out of the story and definitely mess with your enjoyment level. Second, to make a good second chance romance I need two things: 1. There needs to be a good reason that they separated, and 2. I need to believe that they worked through them to find their HEA. And, I didn't get that here. Charlie treated Austin abominably - like screaming slurs at him abominably - and Austin just like, forgives him because Charlie can't remember? There doesn't seem to be any really working through of issues or groveling. Third, Austin was engaged until his fiancé died a few months before he moved to Blue Creek, and basically just forgets about him once he sees Charlie again. And lastly, the setting doesn't really make sense. It's a tiny town, but can host/support a 3 story arcade and a private investigation company? Small towns don't work that way.

This could have been great, unfortunately it was kinda a mess.

havent read something quite like this before. it was very fun, but also very sad. made me tear up a few times. would read again.

Let me start by saying this is a great story. I love second chance romance, and with all the trauma, tension, murder & mystery mixed in, it’s damn near perfect. Unfortunately, it’s not a great book. You’re thinking that doesn’t make sense, right? What I mean by that is there are fixable inconsistencies in details throughout it that impacted my ability to lose myself in the story. It’s little things like POV flipping from Austin to Charlie within a passage or mentioning parents getting divorced, then a reference to them moving without first clarifying that one of them had gotten remarried. Or even someone recounting details of an event and then later remembering it in a way that confuses or conflicts with what was said earlier. None of that ruins the story - the reunion of two guys who seemed to be two halves of a whole and fight to find their way back to each other while solving the mystery of Charlie’s past - it just makes it a little more difficult to enjoy it.
