Completely unhinged but so self-aware that it’s impossible not to love.

A lot of characters are introduced at once, most without much description , so it was a little hard to keep track of who was who in the beginning. I had to look at the wiki page pictures/descriptions. Some of the writing was pretty cheesy but an enjoyable read. The whole Columbia thing was fucked up though.

Did i understand Exy? No
Did i like the characters? I honestly don't know
Could i put it down? Also No

Something about this book dug its murderous lil fingers into my brain.

Think Haikyuu meets the Yakuza.

And for the love of god check the trigger warnings before reading this book because wow.

There are a lot of slurs used in the book, a lot of terrible things (past and present) that happen, a confusing made up sport and some very damaged and toxic characters but idk, something about it just makes me want to delve deeper into the story and characters.

I'm genuinely not sure of my rating for this and there were parts that were very uncomfortable for me to read.

CW: murder, physical abuse, child abuse, death, overdose, drug use, drug abuse, spiking, rape joke, use of the r slur and the f slur, death of a parent, burning a corpse, homophobia, violence, addiction, blood, injury, toxic relationship, mental illness,
state mandated drug use (this one is absolutely bizarre).
And probably more tbh

It's been a while since I read these books. The writing is not amazing and it has a lot of faults. AND YET I devoured this within about 24 hours. I do appreciate the fact that this book mostly sets up the next two books. I like these early iterations of the characters less, but also that is the point, to see how they develop over the series. Especially
Andrew on his meds
is just much less appealing to me as a character, compared to later in the series.

This does mean that I'm looking forward to the next book(s)!

I do have to say, that the writing definitely already picks up towards the end of the book, from
the showdown at the tv show
on you already get a good idea of what the next two books are going to look like, as far as character dynamics go.

1.5

This is a terrible book. It has major ableism issues and is littered with homophobia and a sprinkle of racism. The mental health talk and rep are genuinely awful, theres an entire plot point about one of the characters being on court mandated medication, the whole medication thing genuinely makes no sense to me, and he is completely demonised the entirety of this book; and from what I can remember the rest of the series as well. There's a line question whether his violent reaction to something someone's says is his "psychosis or medication?", for the record he literally does not experience psychosis at all.  There's another line where the MC tells the psychiatrist that she's "obsessive-compulsive" because her office if clean and very organised, and responds "guilty as charged" she's literally a psychiatrist, as a character she should not be perputrating these stereotypes of OCD. Another where the MC is wondering what could be "wrong" with one of his team members from "split personalities to clinical insanity." just gross.

One of the characters, a Mexican man who is the only openly guy character and as far as I can remember the only POC, is shown to sexually harass other characters, at one point he kisses a character, who has been drugged, without their consent, and there's a sort of joke between other characters about how he's "scheming to rape" the MC, and it's just brushed off.

Literally the only reason I gave it 1.5 instead of 1 is because for some reason, that I truley can't pinpoint, I've come back to this series 3 times, even though it gets worse every time I read it.
